CAUS

I had a difficulty in configuring the workstations to use SUS in a non Active-Directory environment. This situation enforced me to write CAUS v0.1. However since Microsoft launched WSUS, there were several additions in the configuration; and it was the time CAUS v0.2 developed.

Considering there are still a lot of organizations have non Active-Directory environments, I decided to release CAUS as a freeware; so that System Administrators and Technical Support team can take benefits from it. I realize there are some shortfalls in CAUS, however I will still continue to improve CAUS.

CAUS - General tab

In this screen, you can configure how Automatic Updates service run in this workstation. It is recommended to automatically download the updates and install them. You can choose the proper time in your environment.

CAUS - Update Server tab

Here, you can specify the SUS/WSUS server used. Also you can set the Reschedule Wait Time factor. Finally you can also configure so that Automatic Updates service will ask the user first before restarting the PC if there is a user logged-on.

CAUS - WSUS tab

It is a new tab in version 0.2 to support WSUS implementation. You can configure the target group for this PC, the detection time (I recommend to use the lowest value when you are testing CAUS in your WSUS implementation, so that you don’t have to wait for a long time), reboot warning timeout, and reboot relaunch timeout. You can also decide whether the user can approve/disapprove updates (however I don’t think you want to activate this option) and silent installation of minor updates.

Of course for a successful SUS/WSUS implementation, I recommend you to read Microsoft documentation on deploying SUS/WSUS; and also browse http://wsus.info/, http://wsuswiki.com/, and other good SUS/WSUS discussion websites.

I hope CAUS will help you in some areas. Your inputs and feedbacks are always welcomed.
